Prolactin receptor in breast cancer: marker for metastatic risk.
نویسنده
چکیده
Prolactin and prolactin receptor signaling and function are complex in nature and intricate in function. Basic, pre-clinical and translational research has opened up our eyes to the understanding that prolactin and prolactin receptor signaling function differently within different cellular contexts and microenvironmental conditions. Its multiple roles in normal physiology are subverted in cancer initiation and progression, and gradually we are teasing out the intricacies of function and therapeutic value. Recently, we observed that prolactin has a role in accelerating the time to bone metastasis in breast cancer patients and identified the mechanism by which prolactin stimulated breast cancer cell-mediated lytic osteoclast formation. The possibility that the prolactin receptor is a marker for metastasis, and specifically bone metastasis, is one that may have to be put into the context of the different variants of prolactin, different prolactin receptor isoforms and intricate signaling pathways that are regulated by the microenvironment. The more complete the picture, the better one can test biomarker identity and design clinical trials to test therapeutic intervention. This review will cover the recent advances and highlight the complexity of prolactin receptor biology.

Comparison of the Serum Level of Carcinoembryonic antigen, Prolactin, and Malondialdehyde in Patients Suffering from Breast Cancer and in Healthy individuals in Isfahan
Background & Objective: One of the most prevalent types of cancer among women is breast cancer. The objective of this study is to compare the serum level of tumor marker of Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA), Prolactin, and oxidative marker Malondialdehyde (MDA) in patients with breast cancer and in control groups. Materials & Methods: This case control study was carried out on the people wh...
متن کاملThe hormonal milieu in primary breast cancer: A correlation between steroid receptors and serum estradiol, progesterone and prolactin
Background: The female breast is subjected to a lifetime of hormonal controls, whose effect is evident at the time of menarche and during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy and lactation. Studies have reported multiple risk factors for breast cancer, some of which are a reflection of hormonally mediated events. The steroid receptors are also served as prognostic factors for evaluating status of mal...
متن کاملCorrelations of Diabetes and the Risk Factors with the Survival of Breast Cancer Patients
Introduction: Diabetes is associated with an increased risk of cancer. Because of the metastatic nature of cancer, the survival of women with breast cancer is decreasing despite receiving various treatments such as chemotherapy, radiotherapy, etc. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between diabetes and the risk factors related to the survival of breast cancer patients. M...
متن کاملGenetic polymorphisms in the estrogen receptor - α Gene codon 325(CCC}CCG) and risk of breast cancer among Iranian women: a case control study
Abstract Background: The Iranian breast cancer patients are relatively younger than their Western counterparts. Evidence suggests that alterations in estrogen signaling pathways , including estrogen receptor-α (ER- α ), occur during breast cancer development in Caucasians. Epidemiologic studies have revealed that age-incidence patterns of breast cancer in Asians differ from those in Cauca...
متن کاملAssociation between Polymorphisms of X-ray Repair Cross Complementing 5 and 6 Promoter Genes and the Risk of Metastatic Breast Cancer
Background and Objective: Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in women. Better individualized treatment needs novel prognostic predictors. X-ray repair cross complementing XRCC5 and XRCC6 are coding genes of the Ku protein complex (key components of the non-homologous end-joining [NHEJ] pathway), which could serve as prognostic factors in breast cancer. Hence, in t...
